My ideal presidential candidate would be a Democrat in the tradition of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. He would be in favor of an effectively high top tax rate, high taxes on corporations, a high minimum wage, and strong labor unions. He would also be in favor of more restrictions on immigration, more executions, more criminals in prison, fewer rights for criminal suspects, no welfare payments for unmarried women with illegitimate children, no efforts to force school integration, no affirmative action, and certainly no reparations.

Considering what has become of the Democrat Party since the assassination of John Kennedy in 1963, I doubt such a Democrat could be nominated by the Democrat Party. Nevertheless, when the Democrat Party promoted the policies I listed, the Democrat Party dominated the United States. The New Deal was popular in the South. Millions of the same people who voted for Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930's and early 1940's voted for George Wallace three decades later.

The Democrat Party lost the dominance it achieved under Roosevelt when it threw the white working class under the bus.

As I pointed out previously, ignoring the social concerns and even the economic concerns of the white working class cost the Democrat Party the dominance it once enjoyed. Black majority schools are dangerous places where little learning occurs. Forcing the children of working class whites to attend those schools lowers their academic achievement, and makes it difficult for them to earn well paying jobs. Affirmative action discriminates against working class whites, and denies them jobs where they would perform adequately.

You forget that one of the best high schools in the country is East High School in Denver, Colorado. It is recognized every year as one of the top 25 high schools and graduates many people who become famous people. You should Google that.

This is significant because at least in the 1960's East High School was naturally segregated, reflecting both the "racial" and economic landscape of east Denver.

That means black, white, spanish and oriental. Oh, and jew. Plus a couple of Russians, a family of Samoans, and a couple Canadians, when Shooter attended.

James Carville explains why Trump’s attacks on Biden’s mental state won’t work: He told people ‘to drink Clorox!’

In an interview over the weekend, President Donald Trump attacked former Vice President Joe Biden as being so mentally absent that he can’t even think. It was an attack that Democratic strategist James Carville didn’t think would work well up against who he called “The Clorox Kid.”

“Anybody can make a gaff, make a word come out the wrong way,” said Carville. “Nobody ever stood in front of the whole United States and told them to drink Clorox, right? We have to quit chasing this stupidity around. He is getting beat, and he’s getting beat bad. He’s getting beat in the Fox poll, the Quinnipiac poll, the NBC poll.”

He went on to quote Axios reporter Jonathan Swan, who said in an earlier segment that Trump’s team is working to change the subject and that they think Americans can’t sustain their level of fear of the coronavirus through November.

“They’re not going to be successful,” Carville said about the Trump team’s efforts. “And we don’t need to be helping him be successful. He doesn’t know where he is right now. You can look, the American people are turning on him by the day. Joe Biden is fine. Joe Biden performed, I thought superbly in a lot of the debates. Yeah, he said some things sometimes that came out the wrong way. Go look at Trump’s gaffs. Look at the things that he has said and the words he’s mispronounced. I mean, they’re just silly. We don’t need to follow this kind of silliness that he puts out. And the idea he’s going to go play golf, and that’s going to turn this election around for him, that’s his only hope, play golf? Man, can’t lose doing that. At least you’re not talking to the public.”

Florida seniors are ‘highly susceptible’ to coronavirus — which could hurt Trump’s reelection chances

On Monday, The Washington Post examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on older voters’ politics, and in particular how it is hurting President Donald Trump with the critical demographic in Florida — a state that is almost mandatory for the president to win for a second term.

“While Democrats have worried about Biden’s struggles to excite younger voters, older voters who are upset with the president are poised to be potentially more influential in November, especially in swing states whose populations skew their way, like Florida, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin,” reported Jenna Johnson and Lori Rozsa. “In Florida, more than 20 percent of those who voted in the 2016 election were over age 65, according to exit polls. In 2016, Trump won the Florida senior vote by a 17-point margin over Clinton, according to exit polls. The state ranks as one Trump must almost certainly win to insure his victory, while Biden has other paths to the White House.”

“Yet for months, Biden has been more popular than Trump with seniors,” continued the report. “A national poll of registered voters released by Quinnipiac University last week shows Biden leading by 10 points among voters over 65. A Quinnipiac poll in late April found 52 percent of Florida seniors supporting Biden to 42 percent for Trump, while a Fox News poll around the same time found Biden narrowly ahead.”

“The skepticism toward the president among some seniors comes as their lives have been drastically altered by the coronavirus, which has swept through nursing homes and retirement communities across the country,” said the report. “In Florida, more than 80 percent of the 2,000-plus people killed by the virus have been over age 65, according to an analysis by the Tampa Bay Times. Even as the state has begun to reopen, most seniors have remained hidden in their homes at the urging of their doctors or their adult children and grandchildren. Most no longer gather with others to dine, play cards, enjoy golf or the pool, or discuss politics.”

One of the elderly voters profiled was Allen Lehner, a longtime Republican who didn’t vote in 2016 but who intends to vote for Biden this year.

“Lehner, who now considers himself an independent, says he is frightened by the president’s lack of leadership and maturity amid the nation’s health and economic crisis,” said the report. “Several people in his gated community in Delray Beach, Fla., have gotten sick; at least one has died. He worries about his own health — he has an autoimmune disease — and also about his adult children, including a daughter who has gone back to work and a son whose pay has been cut.”

American Politics Is Now Democrats vs. Authoritarians

(Bloomberg Opinion) -- The Democratic Party now confronts a predicament familiar to democratic political parties in authoritarian states such as Hungary and Russia. As those parties have learned, there is no good answer to the problem.

The proximate cause of the difficulty for Democrats is that Republicans are suddenly fond of subpoenas again. They plan to issue them to “a wide variety of Obama administration officials” in connection with the FBI’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said last week. “The American people deserve answers about how such abuses could happen.”

This is a lie, of course. Not the part about subpoenas. The untruth is the notion that imagined past abuses by Obama officials, rather than present abuses by Republican senators, will drive these investigations.

Republicans famously defied subpoenas issued by the House during its attempts to investigate discrete aspects of President Donald Trump’s sprawling criminality. Indeed, even the most somber constitutional endeavor — impeachment — was met with a near-blanket stonewall from the White House, which refused to make documents or personnel available.

In the midst of the current national emergency, the executive branch has largely refused to acknowledge the House, disregarding dozens of letters sent by its committees seeking information on the coronavirus pandemic. At least nine requests to Cabinet officials to attend a hearing, briefing or videoconference have been rejected.

McConnell and his Republican colleagues have aggressively abetted Trump’s lawlessness, including the cover-up of his shakedown of Ukraine and the subsequent purge of officials whose professionalism, patriotism or honesty enraged him. Attorney General William Barr is working diligently to supplant the facts of the Mueller investigation into Trump’s dalliance with Russia in 2016 with a wonderland of right-wing fantasy. Meanwhile, armed Trump allies don militia gear to intimidate political opponents.

So how do Democrats respond? The Republican subpoenas will be saturated in bad faith. Why should Democrats honor them? In politics, isn’t turnabout fair play?

Many Democrats will say so. But for a democratic party seeking to sustain rule of law against authoritarian attacks, turnabout also threatens to undermine the very values and norms that the party is fighting to preserve.

“In a democratic context, with two parties, when one party begins to violate or break the rules, the second party has no clear winning strategy,” Steven Levitsky, co-author of “How Democracies Die,” said in an email.

There are still traditional Republicans scattered about the states. But in Washington the party is organized around Trump’s white nationalism, corruption and contempt for rule of law. In Hungary, the Fidesz party has traveled a similar route, and the signposts are familiar: hyper-gerrymandered legislative districts, courts packed with loyalists and a party propaganda infrastructure owned by oligarchs aligned with the party. Even Fidesz scapegoats have a familiar ring: immigrants, Muslims, George Soros.

One hallmark of authoritarian politics, in addition to an adversarial relationship with the truth, is ignoring the law as it applies to party interests while deploying it as a weapon against political opponents. For example, party politicians might ignore lawful subpoenas intended to expose their corruption while subsequently using subpoenas of their own to construct a phony case of wrongdoing by opponents.

Such is the seedy exercise of “Obamagate.” Republicans needn’t attack Barack Obama directly. He has credibility, political skills and ready access to strong allies and national media. Instead, they will likely attack Obama administration figures largely unknown to the public, with far fewer resources, whose words and deeds can more easily be twisted for propaganda purposes.

Few knew the names of the Americans who died in Benghazi. But Republicans exploited their deaths for years with a fully manufactured “scandal” that, like the “Obamagate” fiction, does not withstand scrutiny. No matter. The extended Benghazi attack, the bullseye for which eventually settled on the 2016 Democratic nominee for president, served its nefarious purpose. “Obamagate” will similarly find its target: the 2020 nominee.

Because neither the news media nor the nation’s larger political culture has reckoned with the GOP’s authoritarian evolution, the habitual response is to mislabel GOP authoritarianism as hypocrisy. Calling out hypocrisy is a pointless shaming mechanism for a party that has broken free of shame. Worse, it camouflages a war on democracy as democratic politics as usual.

With no counter-authoritarian playbook, Democrats will simply have to improvise. “Certainly there is no one-size-fits-all answer,” said Levitsky. “Are there viable institutional solutions (e.g., courts, elections)? The existence of competitive elections in 6 months may suggest a different strategy from a case where elections are not free or fair.”

An authoritarian summer is coming. It will be followed by an election shaped by pandemic, demagogy and Russian sabotage. Democrats will have to be deft to prevent further destruction of democracy, or a long authoritarian winter awaits.

Trump is in trouble — and a summer economic ‘rebound’ likely won’t save him: polling experts

A report from Politico caused a stir on Tuesday morning, as it quoted Democratic economists and operatives who were nervous that President Donald Trump could benefit from a rapid economic recovery in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, polling experts Nate Silver and Harry Enten both poured cold water on the notion that a V-shaped recovery would be sufficient enough to lift the president above former Vice President Joe Biden, who has consistently led him in polls throughout the year.

Enten pointed out that Trump has for the entire year led Biden in polling on who is more trusted to handle the economy — but it hasn’t mattered, as voters in polls still said they preferred the former vice president to the incumbent overall.

“I’m skeptical that a v-shape or checkmark-shape rebound will help,” Enten wrote.

Silver, meanwhile, said that even cutting the current unemployment rate by six percentage points over the next six months would leave Trump with a poor economy.

“It’s true that a partial recovery to 9% would be better for Trump than getting stuck at 15%,” Silver wrote. “But 9% is still quite high, and voters could also compare to 3.5% or wherever it had been before… The best strategy is therefore to use a broad basket of economic indicators over a broad range of time horizons. By that measure, voters’ assessments of the economy would likely still be fairly negative on balance by November even with a haflway recovery.”

Trump’s Top 2016 Aides Tell Him: You Might Be Screwed for 2020

President Trump was reportedly sent into a panic after two top aides from his 2016 campaign warned him that he’s in deep trouble in several swing states ahead of November’s election. Politico reports that David Bossie and Corey Lewandowski, two key allies and former Trump advisers, visited the White House last week to tell Trump he had to take urgent action in multiple states. Bossie and Lewandowski reportedly told Trump that his political operation in several key areas wasn’t good enough. The warning is said to have shocked Trump, who reportedly called his top campaign lieutenants to make clear that things had to change. Three days after the Bossie and Lewnadowski meeting, the campaign’s political directors in Arizona and Florida were reportedly summoned to the White House for crisis talks. They would have to look at their kids and lie to them, make believe excuses about why they voted for Trump. On Wednesday, writing for The Washington Post, columnist Philip Bump outlined the results of a new study suggesting that when President Donald Trump endorses Republican candidates, turnout for the Democrat rises — and this has cost Republicans seats in Congress.

“There’s a utility to President Trump’s frequent election-year claims that he can get Republicans elected to office,” wrote Bump. “If Republican legislators believe that he can make or break their political futures, they’ll be more likely to stand with Trump in times of turbulence and support his policy initiatives. It’s clearly the case that concern about how Trump’s political base would view the situation prompted nearly every Republican legislator to oppose the president’s impeachment. Trump wields his endorsement as a stick — while speaking quite loudly.”

However, “new research published in Legislative Studies Quarterly offers an even grimmer assessment of Trump’s effectiveness [in 2018],” wrote Bump. “Far from delivering seats for his party, the analysis by Andrew O. Ballard and Michael Heseltine of American University and Hans J.G. Hassell of Florida State University indicates that Trump actually cost his party seats, 11 in the House and four in the Senate. Why? Because Trump’s endorsements often helped spur voters to support the Democrat in a contest.”

“The president endorsed 80 House and Senate candidates in 2018, more than half of whom were incumbents,” wrote Bump. “Trump appeared at campaign rallies or fundraisers on behalf of 35 of the candidates, with the others endorsed only via tweet. In many cases, Trump’s endorsements were of people facing no real threat; in other cases, he was clearly hoping that his endorsement would get the Republican over the finish line.”

“To evaluate the effect of Trump’s endorsement, the researchers looked at district competitiveness, presidential election results, the region in which the contest was taking place and whether it was an open seat,” wrote Bump. “The result? ‘Endorsed candidates suffered worse electoral outcomes than those not receiving an endorsement — even in Senate races where endorsements led to increases in turnout,’ the researchers write. ‘Candidates who received a presidential endorsement were less likely to win than those who did not.'”

“Of course, Trump’s unpopularity broadly was a factor in how his party fared in 2018,” wrote Bump. “What this research suggests is that his endorsement itself had an additional effect that otherwise wouldn’t have been present. It was enough to tip close Senate races in Nevada, Montana, West Virginia and Arizona to the Democrats. It was nearly enough, too, to ensure the reelection of former senator Bill Nelson (D) of Florida, who ended up losing to Sen. Rick Scott (R) by only 10,000 votes.”
