Plex’s free, live TV service has added a huge collection of shows, sports, and news from NBCUniversal. There are now 31 NBC FAST channels (free, advertising-supported TV) NBC  channels on deck, including Saturday Night Live (SNL), Real Housewives, local NBC News channels, and NBC Sports Now.

Plex might be best known as a powerful media server that can organize and play all of your music and movies, but it’s also got a wide selection of live streaming channels that can be streamed for free without an account on any of the many devices that support Plex (or on the web via a browser).

YouTube TV (and others) lose another sports channel
YouTube TV and Hulu apps on the Roku homescreen.

It's never a good thing when a streaming service loses a channel. But this one isn't all that surprising, since it was previously announced. YouTube TV — the largest livestreaming service in the U.S. with more than 5 million subscribers —  on September 29 sent an email to customers letting them know that the Olympic Channel was no more.

The email actually made it sound as if YouTube TV was caught by surprise. Here's what it sent out:

Paramount+ adds Live Channels for ‘effortless’ entertainment
Paramount+ SpongeBob Universe Live Channel.

What could be easier than firing up your favorite streaming video service and picking something to watch? According to Paramount+, the answer is a new collection of so-called "live" channels based on Paramount's most popular entertainment properties. The feature, called Live Channels, launches on December 9 and includes more than 15 linear streaming channels like Star Trek, Survivor, and SpongeBob Universe.

“Even in the era of on-demand, there is clearly a strong consumer appetite for reimagined linear channels that provide effortless, lean-back entertainment,” said Tom Ryan, president and CEO of ViacomCBS Streaming, in a press release.

Plex adds a new artwork-centric option to its visual experience
Plex's Modern visual interface.

Plex, the company that gives folks a way to easily manage and access their personal library of movies, TV shows, music, and photos, is rolling out a new look for its on-screen interface. Dubbed "Modern," it leverages the artwork for a selected movie or TV show to create a more immersive look, instead of the typical poster-on-a-black-background design that has defined the Plex experience for years. The new design will appear today on Apple TV and Roku clients, with Android TV coming shortly. Eventually, Plex's other clients will be included too.

The new look can be seen on the Plex home page as well as the TV Guide and details pages that appear when you select a title from your library. Thankfully, if you're not a fan of the Modern look, you can choose to stick with what Plex now refers to as its Classic interface. If you opt for the Modern design, Plex gives you control over how the artwork and the background colors mesh together. You can decide if you want Plex to automatically grab background colors from the title's artwork, or stick with the default black gradient.
