Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond were thrilled after beating The Chase’s tough professional quizzer Mark Labbett in a round of TV questions from his new book.
Beating Mark – known as his alter-ego the Beast on the show – at his own game filled the presenting duo with delight on This Morning on Monday.
Appearing on the programme to chat about his book, Can You Beat the Beast?, the former mathematics teacher revealed that even he, as a formidable quizzer and competitor, had topics he found tough.
For Mark, reality television didn’t come easily, while he also pointed out how hard sport can be as such a vast topic.
He is, however, comfortable with history and science as he called them both ‘the gift that keeps on giving’ in terms of banking facts like the names of Britain’s king and queens in your brain.
Alison was keen to have a go at beating the chaser though, pitting herself and Dermot together against Mark as he read questions from the TV section of his book.

The duo faced questions on Downton Abbey, The Simpsons and The Office among others, impressively manging to get every single one right with Mark praising their ‘full house’.
After sharing a congratulatory hug, Alison demanded: ‘Did we beat you?’ to which Mark reluctantly replied: ‘Yeah, you beat me.’
Fulfilling the dreams of all contestants on The Chase, Alison then crowed: ‘Yes! We beat him! We beat The Chaser!’ while Dermot sung and danced along.

Elsewhere in the interview, Mark – who has been on the popular ITV quizzing how for 13 years – revealed that he had formed his character of the Beast while working as a teacher after noting a wrestler saying the best ‘characters’ were based on real people but ‘turned up a notch’.
‘I treat contestants on The Chase like the fifth form on a wet Thursday afternoon,’ he joked.
